Moon Journal Studio
The Moon Journal Studio is an online workshop with a small group of up to six participants that commit to meeting twice during a lunar cycle beginning with setting an intention for their journal on or near the New Moon.
How It Works
Participants track the natural moon alongside their emotions through artistic expression while exploring the moon archetype.
Beginning with the shape of the moon, the circle, the journal is a nest of words and images. The shape of a circle as a mandala can express the self within the evolving nest.
Author and art therapist Susanne F. Fincher wrote:
“When we create a mandala, we create a personal symbol that reveals who we are in that moment…. we create our own sacred space.”
The moon is associated with our emotions, which ebb and flow, like the tides. As a simple daily practice, this journaling process can assist in observing emotions, like a hands-on mood tracker. Workshops taken consecutively over several months map tides of emotions within the participant.
What Participants Say
“The process of making art has enabled me to think about my life and what is important for me in a different way. I can access a deeper part of my self and process my thoughts in a new way while making art. I consider myself more of a writer than an artist, and the artmaking has enabled me to be more playful, spontaneous and open.”
— Edit Serfozo
“I love the Moon Journal Studio! It has been so helpful in sparking my creative process and reflection on life questions. Katrina’s guided visualization was a perfect way to begin the process by opening up to our gifts and dreams. Following the expressive art process took me in unexpected directions. I learned more about what holds me back from my goals. And, I felt support from Katrina and the group throughout the process.”

Moon Journal Origins
I developed this moon journal practice for graduates of a certificate program in expressive arts twenty years ago, and since then have shared this journaling process with university students, and then adult groups online.
The process originated from teaching third graders how to hand-make a journal used to track the phases of the moon for a 28-day lunar cycle along with the weather and daily observations. The archetype of the moon as reflection of emotions invited the addition of an emotional tracker.
An astrological understanding of the placement of the moon at the moment of one’s birth, and the transiting moon through the astrological signs during the lunar cycle of the studio, offered additional insight for hopes, dreams, and personal goals.
